Hjortur Matthias Skulason was born in Patreksfjordur in 1979.

He grew up in Raudasandur in the West of Iceland until the age of 18. He graduated from the Iceland Academy of the Arts with a BA degree in product design in 2013.

His work is characterized by natural materials and traditional Icelandic craftsmanship, which he reinterprets in a new way. Hjörtur has developed a very personal imagery in which the interfaces of human behavior often play the leading role.

Hjortur has worked as a designer alongside the visual arts on various projects in recent years, e.g. he was responsible for the exhibition „Motta“ in 2018 in collaboration with the lighting design company Lumex and the Dutch design company MOOOI, the same year he set up another exhibition in collaboration with Lumex for the British designer Tom Dixon in the old location of the Living Art Musem at Skulagata/Reykjavik.

In 2019, Hjortur was the curator of Galleri Kjallarinn at Skolavordustigur 12 in Reykjavik.
